Getting ready for winter

During the cold season, all you need to do is make your home more energy-efficient, and therefore more energy-efficient.

Locate air leaks

Warm air leakage and cold air infiltration account for up to 25% of a home's heat loss.

  • Caulk leaky windows and doors and install weather-stripping.
  • Periodically check weatherstripping for leaks. It prevents air infiltration and keeps the heat in.
  • Install socket covers or foam pads between the plate and the casing of sockets and switches to reduce heat loss through exterior walls.
  • Also, seal around pipes and ventilation duct outlets.

Heat efficiently

Replace mechanical thermostats with programmable electronic models to save up to 10% on your heating costs.

Key Advice
  • Reducing the set temperature by just one degree Celsius could cut your heating costs by 5-7%.
  • Don't heat empty rooms for no reason.
  • Reduce the set temperature in empty rooms and close doors.
Additional Advice
  • Dust your baseboard heaters and hot air ducts.
  • Avoid placing furniture in front of a heat source.
  • If you heat your home with a central system or electric baseboard heaters, get smart thermostats; they'll automatically regulate your home's temperature based on your consumption habits.
Final tips
  • If you have a garage, avoid heating it excessively.
  • Let the sun shine in through windows on the sunny side and close curtains or blinds on shady windows.
  • Close all curtains and blinds in the evening.
